sweeps blessings

The first day of the Sweeps festival has gone really well. There is a wonderful vibrant atmosphere as people celebrate and enjoy the music and the dancing.

After a slow start Dekhomai became busier and busier as the day went on. Loads of people were initially warey over what the cost might be but after a while word got round that we were offering stuff for free and so people came and had a look.

As well as massaging feet and helping people make prayer beads we have had a lot of chats with people and had the privilege of praying and anointing people for healing. Many people were also intrigued by the St Florian prayer cards.

At the start of the day I was pretty nervous how all this was going to go down in this festival atmosphere – but our presence in a way that provides something that clear;ly fits with the atmosphere of the Sweeps may festival seems to have been appreciated.

WE have another 2 days so if you re around come and find us. Our only concern today is the weather-  as I write it is trying to rain. If it succeeds then we will have to move everything in to the cathedral which I am quite reluctant to do as we won’t then be available to the masses of people outside.

mind body spirit and sweeps

The Sweeps Festival starts tomorrow in Rochester and I’ll be spending most of my weekend involved there (apart from a short break to watch Gillingham beat Southampton!) The Sweeps program can be downloaded here. If you look on page 6 of the guide it outlines what we are doing – although somehow ‘Mind Body and Spirit’ has come out in the program as ‘Sound Body and Mind’.

the program outlines that Sound, Body and Mind is a  a spiritual experience with free hand and foot massages, the chance to make prayer beads, experience the Jesus deck of cards and have the opportunity to receive a healing prayer.

We will be working from 2 gazebos placed in St Mary’s Meadow (which is the bit of grass on the High Street side of the cathedral). If the weather is really really bad as forecast for Sunday then we will be found inside the cathedral. If you are in the area why not pop along.

This year we are seeking to engage with and serve people in the same way that I do when involved with the Dekhomai team at MBS events. The stall for the next 3 days is making use of the Dekhomai name. We shall also be using the Dekhomai Prayer beads postcard along with a St. Florian prayer postcard I have designed specifically for Sweeps. St Florian is the Patron Saint ofr sweeps and firefighters. On the reverse of the postcard is the traditional firefighter prayer alongside a prayer to St Florian for those who feel they cannot or are uncomfortable praying direct to God or Jesus. This prayer takes the tradition of praying to saints and asking them to ask God on our behalf.

Part of me is challenged by what Ihave designedas personally I have never prayed to a saint as I believe everyone can approach God through prayer. I have come across many people, however, who ask me to pray for them because they feel unable to pray for themselves. I hope these postacrds will help people in their own homes or workplaces to be able to approach their Creator God through Saint Florian.

In addition to the above we will be offering the making of prayer beads, prayer and anointing for healing, foot and hand massage, prayer blessings,  Jesus Deck applications, and Ignation meditation opportunities. During or after these activities we will offer to pray with people.

Dekhomai, the welcoming place, is all about getting alongside people, being with people and allowing them time to make themselves aware of the spiritual presence of God around them.

I’m really looking forward to seeing what God does when we give the room for God to do what God can do. Please pray for the team over the 3 days of the festival.

Sweeps Festival

The bank holiday weekend has seen The Sweeps Festival in Rochester. My role throughout this has been to be a ‘presence’ in and around the cathedral. It’s been an interesting role – not particularly pioneering, but there have been some interesting questions and discussions with people visiting. I have prayed with a few people, answered faith type questions, and advised a young man getting married that feeling nervous is quite normal. A lot of the time, though, has been spent smiling and greeting people as they come into the cathedral.

On a couple of occasions I have managed to get outside the cathedral and taste the real flavour of the festival. While the cathedral is a place of calm the streets are overflowing with people enjoying the folk music and the morris dancing while enjoying a pint or two of real ale. The festival has a great atmosphere with people looking to have a good time while enjoying and remembering some traditional English arts. On a few occasions I have been able to enjoy the music and the beer.

As I wondered around on the Saturday I had one negative, but interesting, comment from a woman who walked past me as I was standing outside the cathedral. ‘Ugghhh morris dancers and priests! They don’t go together!’ In a sense she is right, but I wonder (1) why she thought that and (2) is it actually the case.

The tradition of morris dancing is popularly thought to have its root in paganism, and I guess the comment came from the woman because of this. As a Christian, however, who believes this world is God’s creation and that there is nowhere where God is not present, then I have to say I disagree with the comment. Morris dancing and priests do go together (and yes I know I am a deacon, but it was not appropriate to point out the difference to this lady). Actually I have looked into this pre-christian pagan thing and apparently there is no evidence to suggest that is the root of morris dancing. I have also met over the last few days quite a few people involved in church who are also heavily involved in morris dancing.

As I wandered and chatted with some people there seemed to be quite a large open-ness. Large numbers of people seemed to be interested in ‘things spiritual’. I wonder if the interest in Folk and the interest in Morris Dancing feeds a spiritual appetite in people. While the interest many had with things spiritual, it would not be seen as mainstream Christianity. People spoke more of ‘mother earth’ and a ‘deep energy’. I had a sense of people worshiping creation rather than the creator.

I think this may be the case and I am wondering whether a better way to engage with people at this festival is more along the lines of what we offer at the MBS fair I spoke of a little while ago. Certainly many people were interested in spirituality and an opportunity to explore some of these in a relaxed way as we do at MBS may well work here. I wonder whether through things like the Jesus Deck, prayer beads and dream interpretation may the kind of thing that these folk and morris lovers that people here might be able to experience some of the wonder of the creator God.

These are all just early thoughts off the back of the festival but I’m just wondering – does anyone else out there have experience of MBS type stuff being done at musical / folk festivals? If so, I’d be really interested in talking to you.

MBS time again …

I had a long day in London yesterday which ended with me meeting up with a few people including Jonny and Ian to talk about the stall we are running at the Mind Body Spirit fair this year.

As Dekhomai we have been involved in this for the last 3 years now and we were sharing ideas and stories last night I found myself again getting excited by what we are able to do at these events. I love engaging with these people as many are genuinely searching for a real experience.

It’s also, for me, quite a nervy experience but one I wish to stay involved in. I’m always totally out of my comfort zone, totally out of my experience base, and totally reliant on God. Last night we did some low key training with the Jesus Deck and using this does really take me right out of comfortableness as this is the riskiest thing we do in terms of not being in control and needing to trust God.

The MBS fair is still a few weeks away yet I can feel myself getting exited again …

MBS re-visited

I was back at the dekhomai stand at the Mind Body Spirit Festival again today and had that same sense of privilege. Again people spoke and shared concerns, again people asked for prayer, again God blessed what was going on.

Today someone came back to say thank you as she had been healed through the prayer one of the team prayed earlier in the week. She was amazed and wanted to share more and receive more prayer. While praying with someone else I had a vivid mental picture of Mary and Martha and when I shared it the woman was amazed as it spoke to her on a level that only God could be aware of!

Today was an amazing time and privilege again.

I have some thoughts and in particular how my charismatic upbringing enables me to relate and offer prayer in this ‘spiritual supermarket’ – we were discussing this with Steve when the stand was at a very rare time of quietness. It’s interesting that I need to use the gifts that came from that experience but yet reframe them so that they fit into the MBS setting where people are spiritually searching and wish to avoid much of what established church is all about, preferring to take what may work from a variety of different spiritualities.

It’s an interesting situation which I am going to ponder on over the next week or so – we are off on holiday to (hopefully) sunny Cornwall!

Mind Body Spirit

I came away from London with an odd mix of excitement and fear again today. I felt the same about a year ago. At next weeks Mind Body Spirit festival in London Dekhomai are again running a stall. This year I am going to be on the stall on Wednesday and Friday morning.

I am really quite excited because this was easily one of the exciting mission experiences of last year. Serving the spiritual searchers that are at these events is an awesome privilege. This year we have been invited to lead a meditation in the meditation room, which I find quite incredible.

I’m really looking forward to listening to people, to praying with people and just generally welcoming people to our space (dekhomai means ‘welcoming place’). Last year I was struck by how keen people were for prayer and I remember thinking if people in churches were as hungry as these people were that maybe things would be different!

This year we are trying some new stuff and will have some outstanding postcards to give away with text on the back. Jonny has uploaded these here.
