let me confess …

As many of you will know by now, Wednesday is a (enforced?) study day and my main task over the last few weeks has been to pull together stuff from my blog, journal reflections and various networks to put together a portfolio of my first 2 years as a pioneer curate which will be used to assess me in my ongoing training (CME? potty training … whatever you wish to call it!)

A real value of blogging and journalling is that it shows me where I have come from. I look at some posts and wonder if somebody else has hacked my blogger account and written a few posts while I wasn’t looking! Other posts I remember and think, ‘wow … did I really think that?’

The beauty of reading through a few years posts as part of my portfolio reflection is that it gives an opportunity to see what I have missed while I have been living in the experience. It can cause a reaction of ‘how on earth did I miss that?’ My recent experience has been just that.

As I have read over various accounts of encounters I have had with various people it has become clear to me now that I have been receiving peoples confessions in an informal way.

The first and most obvious was my encounter with a man nearly 20 months ago now who I have not seen since who knelt and wept at me feet for 5 minutes before sharing with me stuff he felt guilty about. Others have been less obvious at the time, but clearly been times when people have felt the need to share stuff that they have been holding onto but stuff, as well, that they wish to share with others and ‘get off their chest’.

Over the last 2 years the number of these encounters is well in to double figures and seemingly takes up a large part of my time when I am out in the community. It seems there is a need for people to be able to share stuff that they are holding onto and want to get rid off. It seems to me that a ‘priest’ is a person that people feel able to share their stuff with in a public place. I wonder if churches advertised confessionals as a service to the community if people would make us of them? I suspect not.

This whole area gives me a lot of stuff for thought. Clearly my regular presence has caused some sort of trust to develop. Interestingly, though, it is not the people I meet with every day, in the main, that these encounters have happened with. They have tended to be irregular visitors who have seen me in conversation with ‘the regulars’ who then wish to share with me.

I say regularly that part of my role is digging within the wells of our tradition and finding fresh water for this culture at this time. As we dig, I have said, we find things in our tradition that we have forgotten about and stopped doing – or, of course, we find reasons why we are doing things and realise the need for that disappeared 50 years ago!

When my portfolio is submitted (the deadline is about 2 weeks away) then I am going to spend time digging into the tradition of confession. There is something here, I think, that is needed by the wider community and my experiences in the pub and coffee shops make me think we need to consider how this practice may be reframed for the people of today.

Any thought … please get in touch.

a plan for change!

I have just watched the full speech of Ed Milliband to the Labour Party Conference rather than the edited versions that the different branches of the press have exposed us to.

I am impressed by what he says as party leader and find myself excited by the prospect of the labour party once again being in the position to be the visionary party it was when it first came to power and did all those things that we now take for granted which everyone told them were impossible … you know … things like the minimum wage, decreasing cancer patient waiting times from 18 months to 18 weeks, building new schools, saving the NHS ….

Ed is honest – the Labour Party started well but then lost touch with the real person in the street. The party needs to listen again. I’m glad I used my party leader vote well!

You can watch the full speech here on YouTube, it’s been edited into six 10 or so minute slots my newsoogle, which suits me fine for coffee breaks!

Taize

The monthly Taize service happens at the cathedral on Sunday night at 8.00pm.
It’s a chilled service with candles and Taize chants.
It’s well worth checking out if you have not been before.
Like the new poster designed by Sam as well using a photo taken at a recent Taize service in the cathedral.

pub theo 3

Pub Theology happened. The staff of Wetherspoons had reserved tables for us and we were all set to go – and go we did pretty impressively!

I think this has been the best pub theology we have held so far which I think has a lot to do with there being a lot of opposing views around the table from those with no belief or atheist through the spectrum to those with quite fundamental Christian beliefs …. and possibly everything in between. We also had a great age span as well so points of view were quite varied.

Again the conversation was varied and this time quite a lot more lively which was fun. The format seems to work well and yet again topics I had ‘up my sleeve’ were not needed as people brought loads to talk about and discuss.

The next pub theology will be at the end of next month and some of us agreed to try and read Dawkins’ ‘The God Delusion’ and talk about some of the stuff he raises … looking forward to it!

The next Pub Theology will be on Monday 25th. October …. why not put it in your diary now. It will appear on Facebook soon for you to sign up on.

approaching the table

Another good podcast to listen to here called ‘Approaching the Table’ from Moot. It’s fairly short and I think helpful for peoples thinking on the eucharist.

Quote from the Moot website:

In this podcast recording of the homily in a Moot Community Eucharist on the 19th September 2010, Vanessa Elston explores the gift of Communion or Eucharist as a sign of God’s unconditional love of us.  Not only this, but such a gift of belonging in the community that is the Triune God, opens the importance of human community, and tha challenge to sink roots that are beyond the temporary.

pub theology tonight

Pub theology happens again tonight.

If you like drinking (maybe even eating), talking about spiritual stuff and meeting new people then why not give this a go … we can be found on the tables on the left as you come into The Golden Lion, Rochester (Wetherspoons to everyone else!) and tend to get together from 7.00 pm onwards, although the conversation topic changes regularly so you can easily join anytime.

You can also see more on facebook.

just be yourself!

I was invited to preach at the 8am and the 1030am services at St Margaret’s Rochester today. It’s been a while since I have spoken in a parish church setting and I really enjoyed the experience. People were very kind and seemed very interested in what I was doing.

I spoke about my role, what I was doing and shared some of the stories of the encounters that have occurred and hw the gathering and pub theology has been developing.

Part of the reason, I think, for Father Gary asking me to speak was to encourage people to share their faith in relevant ways. I think I surprised people by what I said … and I think it was a pleasant surprise. I shared that I believed that we do not need to use fancy techniques or have a set formula. I even shared that the word ‘evangelism’ scares me because of what it has become to be perceived as. I believe we simply need to be ourselves and show our interest in other people to allow the Kingdom of God to grow.

I believe as a British society we have lost that interest in our fellow neighbour. So many people wish to tell you about themselves but no one wants to listen to the stories. I shared that I believe part of our mission is to reclaim this interest. ‘Interested is interesting’ is a line from a film I forget but it is very true. Being interested in other people is a lesson that clearly Jesus left us with.

Mission … for me, is about using the gifts God has given so we can be ourselves. For me that is an interest in decent coffee, real ale, films and art and God seems to use those interests. Along with this I am genuinely interested in the stories of other people (maybe I’m nosey!) and like listening to others.

I ended both my talks today with the words of Bishop NT Wright:

Every act of love, gratitude and kindness; every work of art or music inspired by the love of God and delight in the beauty of his creation; every minute spent teaching a severely handicapped child to read or walk; every act of care or nurture, of comfort and support, for one’s fellow human beings, and for that matter for ones fellow non-human creatures; and of course every prayer, all Spirit-led teaching, every deed which spreads the gospel, builds up the church, embraces and embodies holiness rather than corruption, and makes the name of Jesus honoured in the world – all of this will find its way, through the resurrecting power of God, into the new creation which God will one day make.

Sounds pretty cool to me …(unlike the cartoon conversation from ASBO Jesus!)
