Funny what you remember

I have had a number of facebook messages, texts and emails today from ‘friends’ asking me if I feel old! The occasion being that tom was 14 today.

At stages throughout the day I have reflected on what has happened over the last 14 years. The mistakes I have made, and continue to make, as a father were uppermost in my mind. The joy I experience as a father were close behind, as was the real heart-felt wish to be able to turn back time or at least slow it down a bit as the last 14 years have zipped away! I guess the right thing to do i look back and use what you see to inform how you carry on moving with time.

I end the day reflected on the 14 years of joy I have received from being father to Tom. (Beth and Jo have given me joy too but essentially this is Tom’s day).

My mind easily goes back to early Sunday evening 14 years ago when I held the little bundle that was to be Tom in one arm. It hardly seems possible. I remember all the experiences from that one day 14 years ago as clear as day, and yet I can forget stuff from yesterday.

I remember the walking around the ward in the Bristol Royal Infirmary with Sarah.
I remember the pain and joy of labour (which I found quite easy to cope with!).
I remember the waiting, so much waiting.
I remember the phonecalls from one particular young person in our youth group eager for news.
I remember the joy of seeing Tom for the first time and sharing our ‘new creation’ with Sarah.
I remember the fear when Sarah was taken off for a bath and I was left alone, in this very warm deliver suite, with my new born son.
I remember the words I said to Tom as he gazed into nowhere as he adjusted to life outside the womb.
I remember thanking God for this miracle of life.
I remember the joy in the voices of grandparents as I shared over the phone.
I remember it all.

the tree

This Saturday before Christmas we always go as a family to buy (corrected due to a tip off from eagle eyed Gordon) our Christmas tree which we then decorate next week. It’s just the way we do things!
Dave’s cartoon made me laugh today and I wonder what our tree will look like this time next week.

I’m proud!

Today has been a day of pride.

Joe has been unwell and I have had the pleasure of staying home with him and Tom. I don’t spend enough time with my boys so, despite Joe’s illness, it was great to be with them both – I was proud knowing they were my sons.

While I have been with the boys, Sarah has been in London as Beth was dancing with her dance school on stage at The Shaftesbury Theatre. Apparently she was excellent and I am a bit sad that I did not see her too. I’m very proud of her though!

While being at home I have also had a chance to update the blog ‘extra bits’ properly – friends will notice the changes in the right hand bar where I have finally been able to update the prayer letter and writings section.

Love

Last night my lovely daughter went to the youth service at church which was looking at how we know God’s love.
When I got home from Gemma’s commissioning I saw thos little package that Beth had made for Sarah and myself.
WE are not allowed to open it as it contains a bit of her love for us and if we open it the love will get out!

Late birthday present

Over the summer, Tom gave me a late birthday present which he tried to arrange for April.

We have been amazed at Tom’s new hobby of writing to celebrities and asking for their autographs. In just a few months he has collected a few and on his wall has signed photos of Jonny Depp in Pirates gear and Gordon Ramsey, who is his ‘chef hero’.

Tom knows my great love of all things Tomb Raider. (for those of you unaware I have a nodding Lara Croft on the parcel shelf of my car next to a Jesus figure – it gives people stuck on the M25 a little amusement!) In light of my interest Tom wrote to Angelina Jolie asking for signed photo for me which has been very nice to receive … now to find somewhere to display it without upsetting a particular lady in my life as well as showing Tom I appreciate his efforts …. the pressure of being a father and husband!

what a weekend

There were loads of great things about this weekend – when was the last time that 3 England teams won there their sporting events on the same day – or even the same month! Some of the performances (well the rugby) may not have been convincing but it gives something to work from.

Football for Gillingham was a disaster with the mighty Gills losing 3-0 to Southend … I don’t even think Southend have a real football team! But; every cloud has a silver lining as Ronnie Jepson, the manager who has had little inspiration despite bringing in good players, has left … so all Gills fans wait with fear and hope of who will be the next manager! Whoever it is must be able to improve on our current start of losing (quite dismally) 4 out of our first 5 matches.

The real highlight of the weekend, however, was Aunty Sarah’s 40th birthday party. This was a great event, the music was good, the location ws excellent and the people were superb. As well as celebrating with Sarah it was a fantastic chance to catch up with people who had left Gillingham a little while ago as well as chat again and share news and laughter with good friends that we have not seen over the summer.

I love weekends!

Holiday experiences

The holiday time for the Ryan family is now well and truly over. We’ve camped throughout most of August (sleeping 22 nights in the caravan) and as well as managing to miss the rain we’ve laughed, spent good times with friends and family members, eaten and drunk well.

There are many highlights and we have got to visit some great and interesting places and see and experience wonderful things:
Southwold pier was a great place to have a coffee – difficult to describe other than being a breath of fresh air in what I was expecting to be a tacky seaside town. As a bonus the last time we walked to the pier along the prom Tom spotted a seal playing about in the water which was an amazing sight.

Flying kites on Kessingland beach as the sun set. One day the wind of the North Sea was so strong that it was whipping the sand against our legs so hard we had to give up and return to the caravan to change before returning.

Walks along the seashore, noticing the very different moods of the sea, experiencing fantastic sunsets and realising how beautiful the moon is as it rises.

We visited Bodiam Castle, Battle Abbey (and re-enaced the 1066 battle) and Dover Castle (experiencing the secret wartime tunnels)and learnt more of our history.

We barbecued and as I was helped by my children realised that as they become more able I am needed in a different way.

Watching the children play and make new friends was a delight. Being able to sit with friends and drink coffee, beer, wine and just chat was a delight too!

We remembered how versatile the beach can be as we swam, walked, played football, cricket, volleyball, boule, found pebbles, built sandcastles, fished and crabbed.

The Observatory at Herstmonceux was a great place to investigate further the wonders of creation as was a trip on our last day to Port Lympne with Chris and Gary.

There were many other holiday experiences and only one downside … it’s now a long time before we can holiday again!

sand writing

The holiday season is drawing to a close – and for a change I do feel VERY relaxed after spending a lot of time away. It has been great laughing with the family and the weather for camping has not been too bad (we have been home for 3 days!)

Before going away for the first of 3 holidays in the caravan, I set my ‘out of office assistant’ in Outlook to say I was away until the end of August. Although this was not strictly true, and that I would be back for 3 days between each break it was easier than confusing myself and others by leaving a more complicated outlook response.

It’s been unexpectedly great as this has left me space to get rid of loads of piled up admin, outstanding phonecalls and filing rather than feel I needed to immediatly respond to peoples emails unless they were particularly urgent. Most importantly for the next term I think I have solved the frustrating issue of my slow laptop – although it has taken most of 2 days to go through old files, delete old programs, defrag, clean disk etc etc etc. One process took over6 hours and I left it running overnight. A job that needed doing – but when do you ever have time to do clean up jobs on the computer which take 2 days.

I’m now wondering whether to use this Outlook setting on a semi regular basis to help me not check immediatly and feel the need to repond to email which can be quite distracting. I’ve noticed over the lst few years that the downside of email is that people expect instant answers. This holiday while fishing with the children, or sitting on the beach, or kicking a ball etc etc etc I feel God has brought to mind the image of Jesus writing in the sand a few times which seems to me to challenge this culture of instant response.

Anyway – this is a boring rambling post to remind myself more thn anything – I shall write later about our exciting holiday times and the laughs we have had – but for now … its time to get the cravan ready to go away again for the bank holiday weekend which looks like it will be very sunny! I do feel, though, that I am the only person in the universe not heading for Greenbelt … how did that happen!?

to the beach

second blog holiday – looking forward to chillin on the beach

missed out

Today I was looking forward to seeing Laura and Rob get married but Joe was not feeling well this morning so we thought it best not to go rather than risk taking illness with us to a group of people and particularly to Rob and Laura before they go on honeymoon.

I have been looking forward to seeing our friend Laura get married for a while. Laura is quite special and one of those people we have known for over 13 years from the time she was in our youth group in Nailsea. It was going to be a real privilege to see her tie the knot, but it seems by a weird coincidence Joe’s illness saved us from 15 mile queues on the M25.

I’m really sorry we missed Laura and Rob get married, but I’m glad we missed this. If we had left as planned we would be still sitting in the queue now as the road is still closed!
