Genesis 6

Read this the other day:

‘1When the human population began to grow rapidly on the earth, 2the sons of God saw the beautiful women of the human race and took any they wanted as their wives. 3Then the LORD said, “My Spirit will not put up with humans for such a long time, for they are only mortal flesh. In the future, they will live no more than 120 years.”

4In those days, and even afterward, giants[a] lived on the earth, for whenever the sons of God had intercourse with human women, they gave birth to children who became the heroes mentioned in legends of old.’

Who were, or are, the sons of God?

  1. I think they were angels on earth..Nephelim…or something like that…or at least that’s what scholars think…shall have a look, and see if I can find out more!?

  2. Yep…funny really cos I read something about this the other day, I think in Hebrews, where whoever wrote that book reffered to the Nephilim, (which means fallen or mighty ones.)It’s believed that these ‘sons of GOd’ were fallen angels who decided to leave heaven to have wives…why they would do that..??!!”Sons of God may mean godly men of the line of Seth as opposed to Cain’s godless descendants, superior men such as kings, or angels who rebelliously left heaven to take women as wives. This latter view has interpretive difficulties but seems the most likely. It also serves to reinforce the pre-flood evil in the world, fo God abhors interbreeding of unlike species.” R.Russell Bixler (whoever he is!!?)He goes onto say reffering to v4 “The sons of GOd and thier wives produced Children who were giants; the mighty men who were of old were later wiped out by the flood.”I s’pose if the angels did come down and cross breed with humans, and God “abhored” this, it was another reason for the whole flooding the world episode!!?

  3. There are other more realistic interpretations, such as men of God, presumably like you and me, in a community of Godly people who began to associate with people other non-Godly people, or people who follow other other gods. And in this association begin to adopt non-Godly customs and such. Makes more sense than angels having sex with men.

  4. I think i agreewith mitch, the idea of angelic beings descending to earth and having relations with humans seems a little mythical to me. The whole culture of parabalic (is ther such a word?!) story telling must be taken into account for me. Its like where parts of the bible talk about the whole world, should we interperate it as the whole world or just the whole ‘known’ world? It comes down to subjectivity and such. Was this a story that was retold over many generations as ameans of communicating truth yet the story is not actual as it happened truth? Interesting and though provoking blog tho Rob. I like it, lets have more!
