The journey

Ysterday I had the pleasure of leading the morning of the retreat for our London staff and volunteers at West Malling Abbey.

The picture shows ‘the journey’ a prayer activity that I orignally experienced when Jonny introduced us to this when he had this YFC role in London. It always strikes me how honest people are in this simple activity and the result is always exciting – in that it becomes clear that we are all at different stages of our Christian journey – some in the desert, some on the mountin tops, some lazing in the lake for refreshment … and so on.

Too often we think about arriving, and having to achieve, and the need to be sorted. I think this results in us denying the reality of our situation, and consequently missing out on any blessing that God may have for us, or any lesson he may want us to learn.

Today I hope that we were able to show these young leaders that it is ok to struggle, it’s ok to not be enjoying your calling at this particular time, it’s ok to doubt God, its ok to be wherever you are – these are normal parts of our Christian lives where God wlks alongside us which we need to acknowledge so that we can continue on the road rather then get stuck somewhere.

YFC film team

YFC have had a gap year film team this year which has been really impressive.
You can see their stuff here.

personal support day

Today I got up at 5am, left at 5.30am, met Sharron and drove to head office to meet up with rest of the national YFC staff for our personal support day.

This is a day when we write letters, pray for our supporters, record a thankyou video clip for the web, thank people for their giving and invite others to join us by giving. All national YFC workers commit to raising 50% of their salaries from people that believe in them and wish to support them.

I’m doing quite well on my personal support although there are a few vacancies and I am looking for others to join me. I am particular searching for one person to commit to £50 per month, 2 people to give £20 per month and 4 people to give £10 per month. If you would like to take up this great opportunity you can be assured that every penny you donate will go towards my salary. The more I can rise will enable YFC to release other funds to where the need is greatest in YFC’s ministry.

As my YFC partner you will:
be establishing new YFC centres
have the satifactionthat knowing you are helping to transform lives
enable YFC workers to present the gospel to young people
receive Intoview – the YFC mag
receive personal letters
help to train young people in mission
empower YFC to develop new resources
be taking God’s love to young offenders and socially excluded
enable young adults to serve through sport, theatre, music and dance.

It’s an exciting time – If you would like to think about becoming a partner with me please get in touch so we can chat.

Mission In London

I had a day in London today.

Met up with Dean from Southwark Diocese, Rich from Oxygen and Hugh from Greenwich to chat about Mission in London. We talked about what makes this different from other things happening around us. We think this is quite unique as this is about incarnational ministry, getting alongside individuals who want to be involved in mission, locally owned, sustainable and broadly inclusive as far as church-personship goes. As YFC we feel we are here to serve the local church in our local area, not to push a particular name or method of working.

This evening we had a Mission in London training event. In fact it was the second session run by Debbie at CMS looking at cross cultural mission. We had to step into each others shoes – literally! not a particularly nice experience but an experience which made you think! Thanks Debbie!

Guess who’s back!

Well the week flew by.
I always love staff conference as it is a great chance to catch up with friends and see how they are doing and hear their exciting stories.
2 exciting stories that come to mind:
a young lad on crutches becoming a Christian in school, being healed, and walking home the same day with his crutches under his arm …. can you imagine the conversation when he got home??!! ‘Mum … where shall I put these?’
a young lady being told she will become director of her local centre, and then a year later being appointed!

As with most conferences the chats over coffee and in the evenings over beer were far more valuable than the sessions themselves. It was a real privilege to be involved in these conversations.

Highlights:
beers with my friends
Flossie having a word for me one evening – apparently I am a similar to Alexander Whyte!
chatting with local staff
experiencing worship with Andy Flan on guitar, Lee on the decks and our star rapper – an awesome fresh mix
the YFC rap fest – you had to be there!
praying for the bump of Abs (and Mal’s I suppose!)
food

Low lights
5 hours in the car … twice (although the company was cool)
saying goodbye to Ed, Andy and Steve – 3 good friends going at the same time!

the goods heavily outweigh the bads – so it must have been a great week!

Thanks for your prayers … now onto reality again …

Bodelwyddan Castle

I am off to North Wales to stay in a castle for a week!
I’m off to Bodelwyddan Castle.
I always look forward to the annual Staff Conference of YFC, its a great opportunity for some teaching and a real chance to spend quality time with other members of staff.
The list of people I must meet with is massive, but I’m looking forward to the endless chats around mission and stuff. It’s always great fun, after the initial ‘stress’ of wondering who I will be sharing a room with for the week.
Because Warner Hotels usually cater for ‘the older clientele’, there is no wifi/internet access so I have a blog rest for the week.
I drive up tomorrow morning, taking Lucy and Daniel from Gillingham YFC, and back on Friday – so please pray for safe journies both ways!

YFC Christmas Lunch

Today was my last day of work for 2006!!
I haven’t taken enough holiday (I enjoy this job too much!) and need to take it now, which still mens i carry someover to 2007!
Today I had a great journey to head office with Sha and the journey always seems shorter when you are not driving.
There are soem photos of the lunch here if interested …. don’t know why you would be!

New Director for Chislehurst YFC

I spent the afternoon in Chilsehurst YFC today interviewing for the next director there. We’ve offered the job to an excellent person so I hope they accept it!
