great urban creation

Another day of meeting with creative and wonderful people today.

One person was Tom who directs Kick London, YFC’s football ministry in the capital. He has such an exciting vision. It was great to hear his plans and dreams for the centre.

I ended the day before going to lectures by catching up with Rachael from YFC Church Resources in the members room of the Tate Modern. It was great to share plans and listen to each other against the backdrop of London going into darkness. It’s easy to forget how spoilt we are, and what a great urban creation we have in London..

Back from retreat

The retreat was an excellent time away.

It was brilliant to spend some time away with each other and to give ourselves space to hear from God.

A couple of things in particular were a challenge to me.

At the start of our time we looked at our ‘shadow ministries’, those things we find ourselves involved in when we lose focus on our calling. These tend to be things that pull us away from our ministries. While I did not hold entirely with the concept, I could see what stuff I am distracted by and it was helpful to think in these terms.

A Wendell Berry quote really challenged me as this is quite pertinent to me at the moment:
‘it may be when we no longer know what to do that we have found our real work, and when we no longer know where to go that we have found our true journey’
When we think we know what is going on, maybe it is the that we are truly the most lost.

The retreat was great …. the picture shows, however, how my retreat ended. The car broke and had a lift on the back of 2 lorries to get me home and is now waiting at a garage to find out what is wrong with it – I pray it will not be costly!

On retreat

For the next 3 days I am on retreat at Chantmarle with the other senior managers and leadership team of YFC.
Please pray for us if you are that way inclined.
I’m looking forward to some space as the last few weeks have been pretty manic, but leaving the family does hurt and their are always guilt pangs when I have to go.
Looks quite a nice place though!

people!

A massively long day but I still feel wide awake which is kinda weird!
I left the house at 5.15 this morning and arrived in Halesowen just before 8, which left time for breakfast and a bit of a reflection before going to head office.

It was a good feeling to be involved with the YFC team at head office. Working from home is ok, but I have always missed that team dynamic of all working together under the same roof. I remember after leaving my team of 12 in Gillingham that it was quite odd and incredibly quiet to be working alone at home – but it did also mean that lack of interruption meant I got masses of work done.

On reflection, however, I’d rather get less work done and have more people interruption. I’m a bit of a people person and of there is a choice of paperwork or build relationship with a person … well the person will usually win. I just like being with other people.

personal support day

This is a funding request post!

Today is personal support day for all national YFC workers.

This is a day when we do no other work than pray for, contact and write to our supporters and potential . That’s what I should be doing – but the ideas and content of my letters are currently on my melting laptop.

You may feel sorry for me – but you could cheer me up by emailing me and saying you’d like to contribute to my personal support … if you are interested I have a range of fantastic people who donate from £5 per month to £185 per month to YFC for my salary. I always have vacancies for more personal supporters … could you be the next one to join my splendidly wonderful supporters!?

By praying and by supporting with regular gifts you will …

* Be giving thousands of young people the chance to encounter Jesus!

* Enable YFC youth workers to bring God’s love to young people who have no contact with Christians and the Church.

* Receive Intoview – our exclusive partner magazine: packed with the latest information, testimonies and stories from around Britain.

* Receive personal letters thanking you for your support &keeping you up to date.

* Have the satisfaction of knowing you are helping to transform young lives.

* Gain priority access to any breaking news about YFC’s pioneering projects.

* Help to train young people in mission.

* Empower YFC to develop brand new youth resources for churches & schools.

* Be taking God’s love to young offenders & socially excluded youth.

* Enable young adults to serve Jesus using sport, theatre, music & dance.

* Be establishing new YFC local centres – which impact whole communities.

If you email me I can chat more about this with you and/or send/bring you a supporters form. I’m more than happy, too, to meet in a coffee bar, bar, wherever to meet and chat about the ministry of YFC and how you can support us.

Thanks for listening … err I mean reading!!

united

Another privileged day as another group of centres met with the YFC Leadership Team. Another group of diverse people united in their passion to see young people reached with the gospel. Another group of people who make daily sacrifices to see God’s mission work out in their lives.

Today I feel yet again that I have met up with friends rather than colleagues. It was good to be able to chat to so many good, both old and new, friends and hear of their highs and lows. It does seem that we are in a special time of ‘favour’ with loads of new doors opening which will enable us to share the gospel. As is always the case in all mission, there are also the many struggles that we experience and feel hopeless to intervene in.

As we prayed with each other at the end we were reminded by God that he is central to what we do, and that we need to feed our relationships both with each other and with him which can often be neglected in exciting times such as these seem to be. Ending the day by sharing bread (which had been baking all day in the bread maker at the front of the church)and wine was a great way of bringing this to the front of our minds.

new yfc post

Another 5am start this morning for the journey to head office to meet friendfs and chat with some of the others in the Local Ministry team. We had a great day where we shared ideas and our visions for our roles. I love days when you meet with friends, all have a common goal, and all able to share and encourage and challenge each other.

One particular new thing is a new role we have created for our team and based at head office. I think its a key role to how we develop YFC centres. Have a look at the job description and get in touch if interested – or pass it on to others who may be interested:

LOCAL MINISTRIES COORDINATOR

The role will entail communicating with Centres and being the point of contact for advice, support, wider ministry resources, and best practice.

This role requires someone who is a good communicator, highly organised and has an eye for detail. Experience and knowledge of the Christian youth work world is needed.

Salary:In the range of£16,137 to £20,235 a year according to experience

A Day of Firsts

Today was Beth’s first day at her new secondary school – and she seems to have loved it. She acts all grown up, and it probably makes me feel a little older!

Today was my first day of working in the new YFC offices in Halesowen. It is an amazing building and a great environment to work in – if you want a meeting or conference area in the midlands area you should make use of this. I facilitated a meeting there today and the experience was really great and much better than some other locations that I could (but won’t) mention.

Today was the first time YFC got together our workers that work with children in junior schools. This was a bit of an historical event, looking at what our workers do and what we can be doing to support them in this unique role.

Today was the first time I met some people from other centres and new staff. I always count the meeting of new people as being a real highlight of my job. I find meeting and talking with people and hearing of their plans and visions helps me to deepen my understanding of God.

Today was also the first time new YFC training room was used!

A day of firsts can be very exciting!

technology fast

At YFC we are experiencing major server problems at the moment. Since Thursday I have not been able to send or receive email – so if you are waiting for a reply from me please accept my apologies. As my facebook says – I am having a fast from email!

The servers will be up and running soon and normal service will be resumed.

The experience has made me think about how I communicate, and I do like the brief rapid response and solution the email presents. On Thursday and Friday I used the phone the lot, but while it was good to talk, lots of people were out and leaving a message can sometimes be difficult.

But one question … what DID we do before email?
