Another new beginning

Last night I had the pleasure of attending the commissioning of the new team at Oxygen in New Malden.

The great thing about this job is that I get to see some exciting things – and at this event the enthusiasm, the potential and the sheer excitement over what God has done and is going to do what just excellent to see. Richard, the director, is wonderfully creative and his belief in people coupled with his eye for potential and a desire to see others succeed rather than grab the limelight for himself has meant that this centre has developed organically and really scratches where the community is itching.

Last night I saw people that had given up jobs, taken gap years, moved from Korea, Ireland, Romania and other places in the UK to allow God to use them on the Oxygen team in Kingston. More than this – I saw a whole diverse team of people, diverse in nationality, culture, age, understanding all united under one banner, and all united under one cause – to see Jesus presented relevantly in a variety of contexts.

This was not just a commissioning – this was a time where I believe God was looking in and pointing to each individual person and saying ‘Hey … that’s my girl, that’s my boy … do you seem them? Of them I am well proud!’

You can find more about Oxygen here as well.

Sacred Day

Today has been a packed, but wonderful day.

I started in Tooting United Reformed Church to meet with some people to chat about the centre. We had a good conversation around the topics of urban and multi-cultural ministry.

After a brief stop for lunch at my favourite food stop in Westminster (favourite due to the size of portions and friendly family that run it) I managed to catch up with Ian who acts as my consultant for this last year of my training. We had a great chat around leadership in emerging church, my view of sacramental theology, how I saw myself as a priest and what this means in new forms of church. I really appreciate this time and it has given me a mass of thinking to go through.

Following this I met god friend Nichola at The British Library and we visited the

Sacred

exhibition. There are a few days of this left so if you get a chance go visit as its both amazing and free! Seeing the beauty of texts hundreds (and in some cases 1000!) years old is amazing. The sheer care and time in producing them is an act of worship itself.

From the British Library we headed to the Mudlark for the customary drink and food before lectures at Southwark cathedral. Tonight we looked at ethics around marriage and singleness and how eschatology and pneumatology have a bearing on them. (confused … want to know what that means? … get in the queue!)

An entertaining journey home with 2 lecturers put a good end to the day.

As I reflect on the day itsef, I can recognise God in the ordinary, the everyday as well as in the special and extrardinary. In a very real way today I have experienced God transcending the barrier which we have created called secular / sacred as today I clearly experienced God in both.

Commissioning Gemma

We had a great night this evening at Hoo St Werburgh parish church as the people of the Hoo Peninsula gathered to commission Gemma who is the first employed youth worker of Peninsula YFC.

This has been a great process to walk along with these people. In the second or third week of my Local Ministry role with YFC some 3 years ago I met with a small group of church leaders to hear their dream of employing a youth evangelist to work amongst the young people of the area.

3 years down the line Peninsula YFC is up and running, they have Gemma their first worker who is based in a school which has 1500 students.

Sometimes the journey has been hard, sometimes frustrating … but tonight I think everyone saw that all the effort was worth it. This is a very exciting time for this group of people and its been a privilege to be a small part of this.

If you are reading this and thinking ‘I wish something similar could happen here’ – why not get in touch like these people did 3 years ago.

mission chatting

It was great today to be in Haverhill and chat about the mission of the centre.
Beckie has a great vision for reaching young people and I think there’s exciting times ahead for this little town. and I look forward with excitement to what will be happening.

Fresh vision

Yesterday I had the pleasure of meeting up with Gemma, the new, and first, worker for Peninsula YFC.

I got involved in the support of a group of people who had a vision for Peninsula YFC about 6 days after I started this new role and it has been exciting to see these people go to great efforts to get where they are today – an established charity and now a worker!

It was great talking to Gemma who we are convinced from the interview is God’s person for the job. I love meeting new people and look forward to meeting up more and hearing stories of God changing lives.

Please pray for Gemma as it is always hard to start a job from scratch. It’s not always easy hearing what God is leading you to do in a new role so please hold her in your prayers for wisdom, for meeting the right people, for making friends, for finding a church and for hearing God.

London cluster

Today it was great to meet with the Directors of the London YFC centres. We met this morning at the Royal Festival Hall which has good views across the river. The pic shows us ending our time together in prayer for each others situations.

I always feel prayer outside of the church or a typically Christian setting is special. A few people praying naturally in a public space as others are milling around, eating, chatting seems to feel incredibly natural and part of life. In some way I feel as if we are reclaiming part of God’s creation that we have been fooled into thinking sits outside the ‘sacred’. It’s an even greater privilege to be able to pray at the centre of our capital city.

After the meet some of chatted more and laughed more over lunch – thanks people; a great day!

my Taunton Trip

I had a great two journeys today to Taunton and back. I arrived in Taunton at about 8.45 am which gave me time for a leisurely walk to wake up before attacking a Wetherspoons breakfast. Great breakfast – although I had a bit of a shock – there were around 20 people in at 9.00am and I was the only one not drinking alcohol!!!! I was also the only one eating! I’ve had breakfast a few times in Wetherspoons and the odd person is drinking – obviously Taunton is a place for hardened morning drinkers! In a way I found it quite sad … but then realised I was falling into the judgement trap as who am I to judge a certain set of behaviours?

The meetings in Taunton were good. It was good to spend some time with Lucy from Taunton YFC, James from Bath YFC and meet Paul from SWYM. It was a good time of sharing and hearing what each other is up to and wondering about how we can work together for the Kingdom. No easy answers – but good to get together to think about it.

Afterwards I had a good management meeting with Richard as we looked to the future before travelling home – all in all a great day. I feel energised today because i have been with people, thinking on my feet, asking questions, sharing, challenging, encouraging …. so much better than paper work!

Invest in mission

If you have a connection to the Weald of Kent and want to invest in some exciting and innovative mission please read this and consider Den at Weald YFC.

the downpour

The scene on the M11 and M25 looked something like this today as I drove back from spending the day with Jim (Director) and Stuart (Chair of Trustees) at Cambridge YFC today. On one occasion it was weirdly scary as the water flung up my the wheel of the lorry next to me was actually thundering down on the roof of the car. The rain suddenly came and went in great dramatic form.

Sometimes God’s blessing is just as sudden and dramatic – I guess we could not cope with a continual downpour of blessing; maybe we would be washed away.

Despite the weather it has been an exciting couple of days in London and Cambridge looking at mission dreams and strategies. Jim has not been at Cambridge long but already a great plan is coming into place and I’m looking forward to seeing young people lives being transformed.

is this work … or meeting friends?

It’s been a mad day – and I’ve loved it.
Met with a chairman of one of our centres for lunch on the Southbank Pizza Express.
Then I whizzed over to Waterloo and met up with Richard.
I then drove out to Rolvenden to have tea with Den and Sha before sitting in on their exec meeting.

3 great meetings, 3 very different meetings, 3 sets of great people that I have the privilege to be able to call friends.
