a love story with blood

I saw Sweeney Todd tonight with some friends. It’s a truly excellent film with great acting(Helena Bonham Carter being particularly outstanding), dry humour and music that surprisingly enhances the film and story (you can hear samples on the website). Although it’s a ‘bloody’ film it is not gory with gratuitous violence – but if you don’t know the story itself is one of blood and murder.

I won’t share too much in case you wish to see it but I was struck by the paradox and personal pain in the film. Todd is so in need of love that he fails to see it right in front of him. His longing for revenge stops him finding what he is really longing for. His actions designed to appease his personal pain result in increased personal pain.

The ending is emotional and sad and it was interesting to sense being almost moved to tears in a a film where I was wondering how many times I would need to look away from the screen (the answer to that is 0).

This is a love story with blood in which we are confronted with one mans desire to see justice take over his life. It’s a love story that I became absorbed by. It’s a love story worth going to see.

Late birthday present

Over the summer, Tom gave me a late birthday present which he tried to arrange for April.

We have been amazed at Tom’s new hobby of writing to celebrities and asking for their autographs. In just a few months he has collected a few and on his wall has signed photos of Jonny Depp in Pirates gear and Gordon Ramsey, who is his ‘chef hero’.

Tom knows my great love of all things Tomb Raider. (for those of you unaware I have a nodding Lara Croft on the parcel shelf of my car next to a Jesus figure – it gives people stuck on the M25 a little amusement!) In light of my interest Tom wrote to Angelina Jolie asking for signed photo for me which has been very nice to receive … now to find somewhere to display it without upsetting a particular lady in my life as well as showing Tom I appreciate his efforts …. the pressure of being a father and husband!

Harry Potter Weekend

It’s been a bit of a Potter weekend in our house.
A while ago for my birthday Tom pre-ordered me Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows.
We collected that yesterday from Waterstones and saw The Goblet of Fire DVD for £5 so bought it and watched it.
Today myself and the boys went to watch The Order of the Phoenix which was excellent. Some have told me it was boring and I really don’t know how that assumption could be arrived at. There was a great part in the film where Harry shares his skills with other students – his desire to see others succeed was great to see as I think too often ‘heroes’ seem overly concerned with how they can save everyone. Harry seemed concerned that others would be able to protect themselves.
The book is another great read – and my only complaint is that I have not had time to read more of it!
So the boys in the house are pretty Pottered out at the moment!

Shrek 3

I saw Shrek the Third today with Joe. It’s as good a the other two films and this time the central theme is that of believing in yourself. A couple of times characters are challenged. ‘You don’t have to believe what others say about you … you have a choice.’

I find it amazing that so many films carry a deep morality about them. I would go even further and say that I believe film is a major medium through which God speaks today.

God speaks today to his people, whether they acknowledge him or not, saying: you are accepted, you are loved, you are valuable and you do not have to believe those lies that others have spoken into your lives … you are not a loser, a villain, a mistake, a waste of space … you are purposefully created in the image of the Almighty God.

I still find that a mind blowing thought!

Spidy 3

I caught the film tonight thanks to the generosity of my friend Sheena – thanks!
The film was great but you may need to be a bit of a Spidy fan to think so. A good mix of emotion, action, thoughts on choice and other stuff. Great lines in the film to use as well when it comes out on DVD – particularly Aunt May’s’it all starts when you are able to forgive yourself’.

If you’ve not seen this yet then go watch – its cool!

Penance

Tonight at SEITE we looked at emotions and forgiveness in church.

Forgiveness is an interesting subject to look at, particularly how we talk of it, how we act it out and how we confer it.

In part of the lecture we watched the part in The Mission where the Slave Trader chooses some penance to do. It’s a very poignant scene and illustrates well some peoples need to feel the effects of something, to make some penance, as taking a rather bland ‘Jesus forgives you’ is too easy and unhelpful, although it is true.
We chatted about the difficulty of accepting the idea of penance when in our protestant tradition we teach Jesus is enough and penance is an unnecessary baggage to inflict on people.

While I agree with that in part as we were talking it became clear that actually many of us, including this character in the film, need to actually do something to be able to effect and take on board the weight, or release, of God’s forgiveness and doing something helps in this. I have often felt in ‘normal’ services that the general confession and absolution does not really help in a concrete way. In fact it is possible to blink and miss what is going on due to familiarity.

I was struck in the lecture that we may have been encouraging a form of penance in youth and alt worship for some time. I have been involved in many services where we have invited people to bring things symbolically after a time of confession and place them at the foot of the cross, or to wrap things with incense and burn them, or hold tight a pebble and throw it as far in to the sea as possible.

I wonder if this is a kind of penance – an act where we are helping people realise both the seriousness of their sin, but the greater seriousness of God’s love which releases them from the effects of that sin. Acting out symbolically the act of God’s forgiveness in the destruction of the negative effects of sin can be quite a powerful act in our discipleship.

YFC film team

YFC have had a gap year film team this year which has been really impressive.
You can see their stuff here.

Films for sacred spaces

I’ve mentioned Work of the People before and St Marks has recently taken a subscription. It’s a new month so there is a new free video. Glad to see they have started a WOTP blog too.

Live spectacularly

Over the holiday we watched Jack when it was on TV.

At the end, Jack makes an emotional speech which includes the following:

“When a shooting star streaks through the blackness turning night into day, make a wish and think of me and make your life spectacular. I know I did.
” -Robin Williams as Jack.

I believe God speaks through film and reckon this is a reminder of Philippians 2:15 where we are called to shine like stars in the universe.

I don’t make resolutions at New Year as they never last – but if I was going to, Jack/Williams/Paul’s statement would sum up my aim.

Happy New Year.

Casino Royale

Watched the film of the moment with Sheena last night at the new Odeon Cinema in Chatham. The place itself is cleaner but not sure it is worth the extra expense of the 2 other multi-screens near-by but hey…

Casino Royale is a good movie. The film has made a brave attempt – and I’m not going to give any of the plot away – to give definition to the character of Bond. Bond is given his ’00’ status at the start of this film which then goes on to give background to the future life and practice of Bond. It’s using that theory (correct in my view) that our behaviour is determined by our experiences, actions and corresponding consequences of our past. Debbie spoke about this in the cross cultural training at CMS and used this PS2 advert as an illustration.

The film is strangely minimilist in approach – no continual background music that we have become used too in Bond movies, no mass of gadgets although this is contrasted by the use of 2 Aston Martins – I wonder if this is a sub-conscious attempt by the producers to apologise for using the BMW in previous films when we all know only the Aston Martin will do! The ad says: ‘An Aston Martin combines three important elements: power, beauty and soul. Aston Martins are truly special – they always have been and always will be’. 007 just has the power and beauty.

Great film – go watch!
