Hero or Zero

There is a great and free event coming up at the cathedral … well in the Garth, the cathedral garden. The play, ‘Charles Dickens – Hero or Zero’, is a new play written by Alis Hawkins.

Our publicity says: Charles Dickens – great man of nineteenth century literature, social reformer, outstanding example of the Victorian family man – in short, a National Treasure. But National Treasures have private lives and, in Dickens’ case, he made sure it stayed private.

So, imagine what would happen if the real Charles Dickens were to appear before a live studio audience to be interviewed, if his family and friends were to paint a picture of the real Charles Dickens – flawed father, flawed husband, flawed man?

Be part of the LIVE audience – listen to those who knew Charles Dickens best, and see episodes from his life. Seeing both the best and the worst of the author you thought you knew, at the end you will have the opportunity to cast your vote – was Charles Dickens, hero or zero?

There are only 4 chances to see this … you want to make sure you are there on one of them!

el azúcar

Tonight I had the pleasure of attending the private viewing of Andi’s exhibition at Deaf Cat. Andi had taken the Mexican Day of the Dead theme and produced some fantastic and beautiful work – if you are in Rochester at all this week you really need to pop into Deaf Cat to see this amazing work.

Some people without looking may dismiss the exhibition thinking it to be too morbid. But it isn’t. It is bright, vibrant and strangely alive. The festival itself is about continuation of life and the celebration of life … the complete opposite to halloween.

The picture … oh meet El Azúcar, my new monacled sugar skull. I think he looks amazing sitting on my desk, although I need to find a place to show him off proper.

86, 062

Last night I had the wonderful experience of attending the viewing of 86,062, an amazing exhibition which has been created by Zara and Rikard. You can find the exhibition details on facebook, on the Deaf Cat website as well as on Chatham Girl, Zara’s website.

86062 is an exhibition of prints made from the painkillers that have been prescribed to Zara and are a pretty powerful expression of how they have had an impact on her life.

The written word will never do this justice – so you’ll just have to visit Deaf Cat yourself!

secrets heard?

I change the blogs and sites I look at from time to time. I don’t know how, but I managed to stop following Post Secret and forget all about this amazing site until recently. If you have been following SHP for a few years you will remember I have blogged about this before and even bought the (well one of the) book(s) which is a beautiful book to leaf through.

For those of you who have not come across Post Secret, the site came out of a community arts project where Frank Warren invited people to mail their secrets, anonymously, on a postcard. The project ended but the postcards kept coming and so Warren developed a website which now publishes some of the postcard secrets each Sunday.

I guess my attention has been drawn back to Post Secret as I think more about confession and forgiveness. Some of the postcards certainly seem to have a confessional element to them. Others are celebrations and some are pleas (a bit like the one I have shown in the pic which makes me feel a bit sad). People go to great lengths to be creative in expressing their secret some of which must take great courage to even put into writing. There is also, I think, something about the vulnerability of the artists in this as there is at least some risk that they will be recognised by a reader.

I guess a big question I ask is ‘why?’

Why do people send in their secrets?
Why are these people exposing themselves to risk of exposure?
Why do people take such great care to be part of this online community of secret sharers?
What are these people hoping to achieve?
Is it, as Warren suggests, part of a coping or a healing process?
What is it about writing a secret on a postcard and sending it to someone you do not know that has become so ‘popular’ and helpful to some people.
Some of the secrets are confession like, others are celebrations … all are shared openly, I assume, because
the person wants to express them and wishes for them to be seen and heard.

There are no doubt more questions that I should be asking, and quite a myriad of possible answers.
As I think on this whole area, and chat with people, I am coming to think that part of the answer is a combination of sharing something with another human being and simply being heard. But … is there a spiritual element to this too …. that’s the question I need to dwell on more!

Excited over Alien Blues

I’m very excited as I have bought one of Nigel Adam’s works which I completely fell in love with when I saw it in Deaf Cat the other day. It may not be obvious from the photo, but the alien is clay on board, painted with acrylics. Have I said I love it?!

The piece is called Alien Blues, and the more I look at it the more I really do love it. The others at home really enjoy this too, so that’s a bonus as well! My only problem now is to decide where to hang it so that others can enjoy it too.

Nigel is exhibiting in Deaf Cat until Christmas Eve and you should get yourself down there and have a look. You won’t be disappointed.

eyes wide open … last few days!

If you have not had a chance to pop into the cathedral and experience Eyes Wide Open yet, then you should get yourself down there this weekend as, sadly, it all comes to an end on Sunday 31st. This is a great exhibition put on with Kent Association of the Blind.

There is something special about having this ‘new’ art on display in an ancient cathedral. It’s a special place and a collection of special art. It’s all free so get yourself there over the next few days.

eyes wide open

This opens today and looks like it is well worth a visit … I’m lucky in that I can see it a few times.
If you visit why not look me up!

it’s not where you take it from … its where you take it to.

Found this …. so true!

should have gone to Brighton!

It looks like, along with thousands of others, I made the wrong choice yesterday in watching the football – instead we could have had a lot more fun in taking a trip to Brighton and experiencing Beyond’s  Beach Hut Spirituality.

I love the creativity explored by Beyond and the way they engage with faith.

Hysterical fabrications

Hysterical Fabrications opens tomorrow evening at the Nucleus Arts Centre in Chatham.

This is Nigel Adams’ first solo exhibition of his work; so it will be a great event to get to. I love the fact that Medway is becoming a place where local artists can be both encouraged and display their creations.

I’m planning to go along tomorrow to the opening – anyone fancy joining me?
