Liverpool Nativity

I’ve not said much about the Liverpool Nativity, which I enjoyed.
It may not, as some have said, have been as well polished as the Passion from Manchester, but I think the ‘gritty-ness’ of the presentation added to the portrayal of the realities that these young people would have experienced in 1st century Palestine.

I hear Christians complain that the BBC are cutting budgets on religious (by which they mean Christian) programming. I think the Liverpool Nativity shows that they are attempting to be more creative and present stuff like this; that speaks well into a post modern mindset and gives opportunity for engagement and discussion, in an attempt to be more relevant to a wider cross section of their viewers. I’d rather have 2 or 3 of these a year than a weekly Song of Praise out of my licence fee!

If you don’t have BBC3, then you can see this again on BBC1 at 10.45am on Sunday 23rd Dec – if you have to go to church set the recorder!

  1. Thanks for posting about this subject Rob, there seems to be so much in the media this Christmas about complaints from Christians bitching about one thing or another its good to hear someone of your maturity(Spiritual not Oldie LOL)commenting on relevant subjects which affect us on a daily basis I think the lates is Christians complaining about Non Christians singing and enjoying Carols if you can believe that.I read about this stuff and hear discussions on radio shows everyday but not enough is discussed in ChurchKeep up the good work and Merry Christmas to you and the FamilyDuncan

  2. Rob,I doubt that you know me (yet), but I go to St Mark’s and find your blog very interesting. However, I find myself disagreeing with your thoughts about the Liverpool Nativity (for the reasons I gave here). It was good to see the BBC of all people producing a Christian program, but I felt dismayed where they strayed from the original story for modernisational purposes without making clear in some cases that they had done so.But as I have discovered with so many people about this topic recently, I am in a minority with my thoughts.Anyway, it would be good if we could have a “proper” chat after one service, as I have important questions for you.Merry Christmas to you et al, and hope that 2008 brings you much happiness and prosperity!
